Shortly after the war the head priest of Kegonji Temple was suddenly taken by the bell-like tones of suzumushi (bell crickets). He became absorbed in breeding suzumushi such that today the temple raises about 50000 per year. Their chimes never cease. Kegonji was founded in 1723 a part of the Kegon sect of which Todaiji in Nara is the main temple. After the Meiji Restoration (1868) it converted to the Eigenji branch of the Rinzai sect. A memorial dedicated to all insects stands in the temple grounds. An insect service is held during the Autumn Equinox. The temple has a famous Jizo Bosatsu statue wearing straw sandals. It is credited with the ability to grant each person one wish whatever that may be.
