Main Temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. Origin goes back to 1175 when the priest Honen the founder of the sect built a hermitage. Although the temple was repeatedly destroyed by fire and civil strife it eventually reached the present state of magnificence with the help of the Shoguns of the Tokugawa Family and other powerful figures of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Main Hall housing the statue of Honen and the Sanmon(Gate) both National Treasures and other architecures many of which are designated Important Cultural Properties cover an area of 145000 sq. m. The Sanmon is the largest of its kind in Japan and has recently been restored to its former grandeur. Among the many cultural assets is a 48-volume illustrated biography of priest Honen (a National Treasure).
