Located by the pond near the Ainomachi Entrance to Kyoto Imperial Palace. The 12th century war lord Taira-no-Kiyomori enshrined the deities of Ikutsushima-jinja (in present Hiroshima) here for the sake of his mother and this is the origin of the shrine. The stone torii (gate to sacred area)is one of the 3 unique toriis in Kyoto for its style. Ichikishima-himeno-mikoto and 2 other deities are enshrined
along with Gion-nyogo the mother of Taira-no-Kiyomori.
