Contents
Kabuki originated in simple playhouses along the banks of the Kamo River. Of the seven theatres authorised in 1615-1623 only the Minami-za (South Theater) remains. The theater has been managed by Shochiku Co. since 1906. The total surface area of 4 floors plus a basement floor is 6600 square meters. A complete renovation in 1991 improved the acoustic and lighting systems the stage and audience seats (1086 persons) to meet the demands of various types of entertainment from Kabuki to modern musicals. In 1996 the theater was registered as a National Important Cultural Property.
